What Causes Skin Tags?

Skin tags can appear anywhere on the body, but especially where skin rubs against skin or clothing, and most commonly occur on dry skin like the neck, armpits, and groin folds. These small pieces of soft, hanging skin may have a peduncle, or a stalk. They are quite common and typically occur after midlife. Skin tags affect both men and women equally. Other names for skin tags include acrochordon, cutaneous papilloma, cutaneous tag, fibroepithelial polyp, fibroma molluscum, fibroma pendulum, soft fibroma, and Templeton skin tags.


Are skin tags a sign of cancer?

Skin tags by themselves are harmless. They are not cancerous and they do not increase the risk of any kinds of cancer. These tiny flaps of tissue hang from the skin and may appear alone or in a group. Certain skin tags could impact your quality of life. For example, if a skin tag grows on your eyelid or near your eye you may want to have it removed for cosmetic reasons. If you have questions about whether an unusual formation on your skin is a skin tag you should include a skin-checkup with your primary physician as a normal part of your annual check-up and health care plan.


How do I get rid of skin tags? Can you just cut off a skin tag?

You should always consult with a physician before attempting to diagnose a skin condition or self-treat. Your physician will have the greatest insight and recommendations for addressing skin tags. This may involve removal of the skin tag in the doctor’s office. You should not attempt to remove the tags yourself.


Do skin tags grow back?

Skin tags are not likely to grow back after they are removed, though others may grow in the same area. For the most part they are harmless and won’t cause any problems other than their appearance. However, as with all skin growths if you notice a change in size or colour it’s a good idea to see a medical provider.

How do I prevent skin tags?


Work with your doctor and dietitian to plan meals that are low in saturated fat; exercise at medium or high intensity for at least 30 minted each day and 5 days each week; Keep all skin folds dry to prevent friction; and don’t wear clothing or accessories that irritate your skin.
